There are 26 community pharmacies throughout Herefordshire which are open a total of 1398 hours per week. Community pharmacies have long opening hours, including Saturdays and Sundays and so access to a healthcare professional for general advice on staying healthy, or to discuss specific medicines or symptoms is easy, with no appointment needed. Simply pop in and ask to talk to the pharmacist.
NHS Herefordshire works closely with all pharmacy contractors to ensure that patients are able to access pharmaceutical services every day of the year. On bank holidays a pharmacy rota system operates in Herefordshire. A notice is displayed in the window of all pharmacies, notices are placed in the local press and healthcare professionals on duty over holiday periods are informed as to when pharmacies are open for advice and supplies of medicines.
Information on the wide range of services available through community pharmacies across Herefordshire can be found via the pages in this section.
Over £25 million pounds is spent on prescription medicines each year in Herefordshire. Managing medicines is vital as it can improve patient care and satisfaction, improve the health of the population, and make the best use of the skills of pharmacists to ensure that NHS resources are used effectively.
Community pharmacists undergo four years of training at University and then a further year working in a community pharmacy before qualifying so they are really the experts in medicines. Since the introduction of the new pharmacy contract in 2005 NHS Herefordshire has been able to commission a number of additional services from our local community pharmacies so that as well as providing advice on medicines and dispensing your prescriptions, they can help you to stay healthy as well!
