What to expect

Withdrawal symptoms

Lots of people start smoking again because they feel they can't cope with the withdrawal symptoms. The initial few days without nicotine are often the hardest part of going smokefree, as this is when you are fighting your physical addiction.

Nicotine replacement products will help you to reduce the severity of your withdrawal symptoms and make going smokefree more manageable.

After the nicotine cravings pass, you'll find it much easier to stop smoking, however you may experience some of the following withdrawal symptoms but remember...

After the first few weeks you will soon feel much better!

Cravings

Your brain is missing the nicotine fix, this should get better after a few weeks.

Coughing

Your lungs are clearing out tar. Try having a warm drink to soothe your cough.

Hunger, diarrhoea or constipation

Your body is just returning to normal, try to eat healthy snacks instead of junk food.

Dizziness

Your brain is getting used to having a normal amount of oxygen. Don't worry this should only last a few days.

Trouble sleeping, bad moods

These are signs of nicotine withdrawal and shouldn't last more than two or three weeks. Cut down on coffee and tea, and try to get more fresh air and exercise.

Remember - these symptoms are a sign that your body is starting to recover..
